"Communicate the End of Rape"
The Purple Ribbon Campaign for Rape Awareness is an educational
campaign intended to increase the awareness levels of the reality of rape and sexual assault
on college campuses and in surrounding communities, cities and towns. The campaign originated
on the Northern Arizona University campus and the Flagstaff, Arizona community. Although the
campaign is an educational campaign, we encourage students, faculty and administration and local
residents to show their support for this cause by wearing a purple ribbon during the first
month of school.
The Purple Ribbon Campaign for Rape Awareness is focused during the
first month of school (August and September) because more than 80% of rapes occur within the first
three weeks of school. The purpose of this campaign is to take a PROACTIVE approach by educating
college students. The purple ribbon acts as a constant reminder to others that rape and sexual
assault are unacceptable in our society.
The purple ribbon is symbolic because is represents all of violence
in society. The color purple is used because both rape and sexual assault fall into this
category. In 1996, rape was the fastest violent growing crime in America.
Partnering Organizations
Associated Students for Women's Issues (ASWI) is one of three
representative student bodies on the Northern Arizona University campus. ASWI provides a forum to
voice the concerns of women at NAU and creates opportunity for leadership within a student gorup.
ASWI develops educational programming designed to inform students about concerns women have. ASWI
utilizes many forms of education. Resources for education opportunities extend from instructors
on campus to literature from different perspectives. ASWI attempts to educate the campus community
through various programs. Such topics include: Women and Health Care, Multiculturalism, Women and
Athletics, Body Image, Violence Against Women Awareness Week, Domestic Violence Week and the Purple
Ribbon Rape Awareness Campaign.
Student Education Team (SET) is an educational branch of ASWI,
whose mission statement is "Education, Advocacy and Outreach." SET is a peer education program with
between 15-30 members. SET addresses gender related issues on the NAU campus through educational
interaction and passive programming. Each member attends an intensive training program while presentation
leaders complete additional training in content and delivery. The three educational programs the
Student Education Team presents to residence halls, sororities, and other student organizations
are: Sex in the Dark, Maybe We Should Talk, and Drawing the Shades.
