LOVE YOUR BODY DAY - Oct. 18th
Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror?
Hollywood and the fashion, cosmetics and diet industries
work hard to make each of us believe that our bodies are unacceptable and need constant
improvement. Print ads and television commercials reduce us to body parts — lips, legs,
breasts — airbrushed and touched up to meet impossible standards. TV shows tell women
and teenage girls that cosmetic surgery is good for self-esteem. Is it any wonder that
80% of U.S. women are dissatisfied with their appearance?
Women and girls spend billions of dollars every year on
cosmetics, fashion, magazines and diet aids. These industries can't use negative images
to sell their products without our assistance.
Together, we can fight back.

CANDLELIGHT VIGIL
Well, you certainly don't look like a battered woman.
How many women hear this every year after finally escaping a violent situation? Thousands.
So, why did you stay with this person? How could you let them treat you this way? No woman
or man ever enters into a relationship planning to tolerate violent behavior, be it mental
or physical abuse. Essentially we all are aware of this, but the bare truth is incredibly
easy to forget. The fact is that every 15 seconds, a woman is beaten by her partner. These
victims are not necessarily insecure or innately co-dependent, and these women do not possess
the faces of strangers. These faces are those of our mothers, our sisters, our best friends,
ourselves, and they usually harbor years of emotional and physical imprisonment. Actually,
four thousand women do not seek help soon enough, and are killed through acts of domestic
violence. Yet many more are struggling to survive, and struggling to rebuild their lives
after living through a myriad of torment. These incredible people deserve and desperately
need our support. Every October ASWI sponsors a Candlelight Vigil for victims and survivors
of domestic violence to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is an evening to
honor the courage of these amazing individuals who have found the strength to leave the people
they love, yet place their lives in danger. It is an event to mourn for and to celebrate those
four thousand annual victims who don't escape the wrath of a partner. And certainly, the
Candlelight Vigil is a time to inspire and offer empathy to anyone currently in a violent
situation, to let them know they are never alone. We have several speakers each year who
share their thoughts and feelings about domestic violence. There are also several opportunities
to share experiences and commemorate the lives of victims.

COMMENCEMENT FLOWERS
Every fall and spring graduation, ASWI sells flowers to
raise funds to support our many activities and annual programs. Commencement Flowers,
a company in California who contracts with universities and colleges all over the country,
provides the flowers we sell. Graduations occur on the Friday and Saturday of exam week.
Each college has its own individual graduation, and NAU
has a Main graduation on Fridayfor all graduates to come together. The individual graduations
occur on Friday and Saturday at many different times and locations. Common locations are
Walkup Skydome,
Ardrey Auditorium, and
Prochnow Auditorium.
ASWI has volunteers at each location for every graduation.
