Report from Anne Ballard who went to DC Feminist Conference

3 steps from prez, 5 kids,
was stay at home mom until daughter graduated high school,
why wasn't she on cover of Newsweek or time?
Africa:
an average man in sub-Saharan Africa has access to 3 condoms a year
United Nations Population Fund:
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes
the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity.
UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programs to reduce
poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young
person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.
They have reduced maternal mortality in 8 countries.
U.S is the ONLY country to with hold ALL funds.
U.S. cut off 34 million a year
that is what we are spend in one day in Iraq.
When Taliban were in Afghanistan:
Women could not see male doctors.
All female doctors were laid off (40% of doctors were female).
4 female doctors were shot in a clinic because they were not allowed to practice.
This means a female child would have no medical assistance.
Women could not wear shoes that made noise.
Could not wear white socks.
Her mother used to wear mini skirts and bell bottoms- very westernized in fashion before Taliban.
U.S. was going to recognize Taliban as Gov.
FMF stopped that!!!!
TODAY: the capital and largest city in Afghanistan only has electricity from 6-9pm every
day. this never used to be a problem before.
There has been a 60% increase of poppy production in Afghanistan this year alone- WHY?
Last year of 86 senior police officials who were reappointed, 14 had extensive records as
human rights abusers, drug traffickers and warlords.
Why Afghanistan? OIL
• There are two roots and one, the fastest one, would be to build a pipeline
under Afghanistan to transport oil.
Unicall was based out of Texas, now L.A.
Unicall ended up giving up the pipeline for three reasons:
Their second reason: (reworded)- the feminists will never get off our backs.
EXXON made 44 billion $$$$$ in one year.
What investments does our school have that are in relation to the Sudan?
Indirect investments with the Sudan raise money to help support the military.
This aids to the genocide in Darfur.
This is the first time genocide has been named and NOT stopped.
200,000 have been killed in Darfur (probably more) some say 400,000.
650,000 have been killed in Iraq and it is NOT considered genocide.
We need to find out which companies our school invests with and then start a divestment program
to stop the funding of this genocide.
"The truth will set you free- but first it will piss you off"
"you don't ask for power- you find way to take it"
"Don't wait your turn- take your turn"
"Respecting other peoples rights is peace- Benito Juarez"
"If you want to move fast- go alone- If you want to move forward go with others-"
-Melinda Gates
" Your activism continues to challenge the conscience of the world- Nancy Pelosi"
President Bush's statement on Nancy Pelosi becoming the first woman speaker of the
house- "In my first act of bipartisan outreach since the election, I shared with her
the names of some Republican interior decorators who can help her pick out the new drapes in her new office." AHHHHHHHH
